In SEO, people say “the algorithm” the way people talk about “the weather.” It’s always there, it changes, and everyone has a story about it.

Strictly speaking, an algorithm is a set of rules and models that take inputs (signals) and produce outputs (rankings). In practice, it’s a whole stack of systems: crawling, indexing, spam detection, relevance, quality, and the ranking layer.

If you want a useful mental model: Google doesn’t rank “websites.” It ranks documents (pages) for queries. Your site is a collection of documents, plus a reputation.

Algorithm vs signals vs systems (quick clarity)

These terms get mixed up a lot:

  • Signals: measurable inputs like links, freshness, page speed, structured data, or query intent match.
  • Systems: components that process a specific concern, like spam detection or page experience evaluation.
  • Algorithm: the overall decision-making process that combines many systems and signals to rank results.

When you hear “Google changed the algorithm,” it often means “one system got stricter,” not “everything was rewritten.”

Why chasing “algorithm hacks” usually backfires

Most algorithm myths come from two patterns:

  1. Correlation turned into causation. Someone changes a headline and traffic goes up. They credit the change, ignoring seasonality, competitors, or indexing delay.
  2. Short-term wins that collapse. A trick works for a week, then a spam system catches up.

If your strategy depends on staying slightly ahead of spam detection, you’re building on sand.

What to do when traffic drops after an update

I like to break it into three buckets. Not fancy, just practical:

1) Crawlability and indexing

Before you blame the algorithm, confirm Google can actually access and index the page:

  • robots.txt blocking
  • noindex tags or X-Robots-Tag headers
  • canonical pointing somewhere else
  • soft 404 behavior

This is where a lot of “algorithm hits” turn out to be self-inflicted.

2) Relevance and intent match

Ask a brutally simple question: does your page solve what the query asks?

If the SERP shifted toward guides and your page is a product pitch, you’re probably going to lose. If the SERP shifted toward ecommerce and you wrote a long essay, same problem.

3) Quality, trust, and usefulness

This is where things get messy because “quality” isn’t one factor. It’s a set of patterns:

  • thin pages that don’t add anything new
  • pages that look like they exist mainly to rank
  • poor UX that makes users bounce quickly
  • content that’s outdated but still pretending it’s current

Algorithm updates you should care about

Not every named update matters, but some classes of change show up repeatedly:

  • Core updates: broad adjustments; winners and losers often reflect relevance and overall quality.
  • Spam updates: stricter detection of link schemes, doorway pages, scraped content, cloaking.
  • Page experience / CWV-related changes: usually not a total ranking rewrite, but it can be a tie-breaker on competitive queries.
